Metro Central Education District, Cape Town

Supported by

Schools

The workshop was stimulating and helped me to make connections with my role as an OT inside the classrooms and how to adapt my therapy sessions.

Wow the programme is simply the best thing to start with in Grade R… what a wealth of vocabulary our children should have in Maths and English in Grade 3.

I enjoyed this very thoughtful and well-demonstrated course… an excellent academically backed-up programme with a scientific way of going about the teaching of the concepts.

Louis I salute you. I am empowered by the presentation. Never a dull moment even though the weather was hot. I've already implemented the programme with my learners.

I have learned new strategies to use across the CAPS curriculum, also new exciting ways to build language. I've become more aware of the language that I use in my classroom.

I feel very strongly that Basic Concepts should be introduced to all learners- this will give me the time to develop their conceptual language and increase their vocabulary and verbal fluency.

My concern about my learners’ language barriers and how to overcome these barriers has been solved for me.

Thank you for introducing me to this "life skill". It is wonderful that there is also an online, interactive, support system with resources available.

Basic Concepts are the building blocks on which cognition and perception is built.

I had an idea what the course would be like, but it was much more than what I had expected.

Very informative. Well planned. Well organised. Based on CAPS. Good intervention programme.

The BCP focuses on the learner… where the teacher acts as a mediator, prompts to access logical thinking and develops language.

I learned a new language to use with my learners.

This workshop is one of the most beneficial workshops I have attended. The trainer’s presentation style was warm, easy to follow and understand. I like that he included practical activities, examples and demonstrations.

I am really glad I made an effort to attend: Fantastic, enlightening, empowering.

Metro Central Education District, Teacher Training, March 2014

It made me look at my teaching in a different way. I am excited to implement what I have learnt.

Metro Central Education District, March 2014

The sessions were clear, informative, exciting, well presented, practical, logical and relevant to the context of teaching young learners.

I realized that if one lays down a solid foundation for your learners they will become self-assured and confident human beings.

If you understand the basic concepts you will have a better understanding of more complex concepts.

The emphasis on language throughout the programme helps to develop learners' understanding of concepts and expand their vocabulary. The BCP stops learners from guessing, it gives them more structure and develops their cognitive functioning.

I love the programme. I was not aware of how to introduce a concept … . If I could reverse my years in teaching, I bet I would have produced mathematicians, scientists and doctors.

Now I can help the learners from our poorer areas to verbalize for themselves…  they are becoming more confident and starting to love their educational journey.

Thank you Louis for you dedication and enthusiasm. We need our teachers to be enthused with a love of children and a passion for mediating to our learners. God Bless.

Metro Central Education District

This is an excellent programme that can benefit any learner or educator.

Metro Central Education District

I have a girl called L.V. who could not speak English at all. After implementing the BCP she has developed some English vocabulary and is eager to speak.

Metro Central

One of my Xhosa learners who could not speak a word of English has now acquired vocabulary through the BCP. I have seen some progress in reading and mathematics with some pupils.

Two of my focus group learners are now able to use full, constructive sentences when speaking in class. They are able to identify and remember the concepts taught to them.

'I can actually see results from using some of the ideas I got during the training.'

'Definitely exceeded my expectations. I see that the BCP can have far reaching consequences if implemented optimally. We were told the how and why of implementation rather than the what.' (Metro Central, 2012)

'It was well run... Knowledge gained priceless. It taught me vital strategies in the teaching model for optimal learning and understanding to take place.' (Metro Central, 2012)

The project is located in the central region of Cape Town, Western Cape.

Description

The project is being implemented by Foundation Phase teachers and learning support teachers in mainstream schools with small groups of learners who experience barriers towards learning. The majority of teachers who have been trained are Grade 1 teachers, but recently a significant number of Grade R teachers have also been trained.

The project is an intervention of the National Literacy and Numeracy Strategy of Metro Central. The teacher-mediators are strongly supported by the district officials as well as the project leader.

Evaluation

The learners who participate in the programme are monitored and assessed continuously (formative and summative) by their teachers during the year. The learners’ progress during the programme is evaluated according to the required outcomes of the National Curriculum Statement. Portfolios of the learners’ work are also available for review. The data gathered thus far suggests positive effects for this intervention in the Metro in the areas of school readiness, Grade 1 performance and progression to Grade 2. (See research below).
