Stanford Students Reflect on Their Experiences with the Basic Concepts Foundation (April-June 2024)
Stanford Students: Reflections
Willow Hertz, an American Studies major with a minor in Education, aimed to broaden her Americentric perspective on education through her internship with Basic Concepts Foundation (BCF). Her research provided her with deep insights into the classroom dynamics in South Africa and the implementation of the Basic Concepts Programme (BCP). She was inspired by the dedication of local teachers and their efforts to overcome systemic challenges. Willow expressed gratitude to Aimee Chiat, Michele Lothian, Julie-Anne Lothian, and Dr. Louis Benjamin for their support and guidance throughout her project, which enriched her understanding and appreciation of the BCP.
Samiya Rana, a History major focusing on race, colonial history, and South Africa with a minor in African studies, found her experience with Basic Concepts Foundation (BCF) deeply meaningful. Her internship broadened her understanding of child development, racial injustice, and educational barriers. The Basic Concepts Programme (BCP) inspired her with its approach to fostering structured thinking, active questioning, and self-confidence in students. Samiya expressed gratitude to Dr. Louis Benjamin, Aimee Chiat, Michele Lothian, and Julie-Anne for their guidance and support, which enriched her learning and inspired her future work in juvenile justice and youth empowerment.
