Durbanville Schools Foundation: Graduation of Teacher Mediators

Graduation of Teachers as Mediators of the Basic Concepts Programme

Eighteen teachers from our four project schools were recently certified as Mediators of the Basic Concepts Programme (BCP). This marks a significant milestone in their professional development and in our shared commitment to improving learning for all children.

The graduation ceremony, hosted at Alpha Primary School, was a joyful and beautifully organised event. The venue was thoughtfully decorated, and guests were treated to a wonderful spread of refreshments.

We were privileged to be addressed by several of our valued partners, including representatives from the Metro North Education District and the Durbanville Schools Foundation, whose collaboration and support have been central to the success of this project.

Dr Louis Benjamin, Founder and Director of the Basic Concepts Foundation, delivered the keynote address titled “Empowering Change through Mediation.” In his address, he reflected on the teachers’ growth, the positive impact of the programme on learners, and the deeper meaning of becoming a mediator of learning. (A copy of the address can be found in the documents below.)

During the ceremony, teachers were warmly commended for their hard work, commitment, and perseverance throughout the two-year training process. Several teachers shared their inspiring reflections on how the BCP has transformed their classrooms—improving learners’ vocabulary, confidence, and engagement, while also enriching their own teaching practices.

We are proud to welcome these newly certified mediators into our growing community of BCP Mediators—educators who believe in the potential of every child and the possibility of meaningful change in every classroom.
