BCP Focus Schools: Edendale Primary Teachers Complete Training

Teachers at the Edendale Primary school in Manenberg are proud to have completed 18 hours of training in the Basic Concepts Programme.

Teachers remarked that they enjoyed the pace of the training and found it interesting and very informative. "Learning about how children learn and think gave us an opportunity to think about the way we teach learners to build thinking skills", said another teacher.

The Core concepts of Colour, Shape, Size, Position, Number and Letter was the content for the BCP training this year. Teachers were exposed to the skill of mediation and how to use the Concept Teaching Model to enhance small group teaching and learning in the classroom.

Teachers participated actively and discussed how effective the programme could be with their learners who experienced barriers to learning because of their socio-economic background. The Head of Department, Mrs J Petersen, said that they were eager to be trained because they had heard from other teachers that the BCP was effective to make a difference for these learners who are not school ready.

The eight trained teachers will implement the BCP and apply the six steps of the Concept Teaching Model to build stronger vocabulary and thinking skills in their Foundation Phase learners, preparing them for 2026 and beyond.
