Namaqua Education District (Phase 2): First Visit To Project, 2016

Monday, February 15, 2016 - 08:00 to Friday, February 19, 2016 - 16:30

Set-Up of Project

Teachers from 4 circuits in the Namaqua District will attend a 2-day orientation workshop in Springbok, Northern Cape. District and Provincial officials will also attend the orientation workshop.

After the workshop the teachers willl start to implement the first two conceptual domains of colour and shape in their classrooms.

The District and Provincial officials will accompany the Project Leader on his mentoring visits to these project teachers to help them with the implementation.

While the District officials will be expected to provide support to the project teachers, the Provincial officials will return to their districts to implement the programme with a small group of learners.

See documents below for a breakdown of the schools, teachers, and learners.

It made me look at my teaching in a different way. I am excited to implement what I have learnt.

'Definitely exceeded my expectations. I see that the BCP can have far reaching consequences if implemented optimally. We were told the how and why of implementation rather than the what.' (Metro Central, 2012)

Central Training 2012

Basic Concepts are the building blocks on which cognition and perception is built.

Metro Central Training: WCED (February, 2015)

‘BCP is foundational to a child's learning. It is the building blocks on which all other concepts are built. A concept needs to be fully understood by a child before a new concept can be taught. We often rush children's learning due to time constraints which is not correct.’ (KIDZPOSITIVE, Occupational Therapist, 2011)

Teacher Feedback

‘It is an excellent programme. Just a pity that not all reception year educators are exposed to the training. My understanding of the programme- it is developed to systematically mediate concepts so that learners are guided to develop an understanding and so that learning is meaningful.’ (Metro Central, 2012)

Training Feedback

‘All foundation phase educators, esp. Grade R, should attend this workshop. If everyone in the education system uses this BCP model, we should see remarkable improvements in the learners' LIT/NUM over a couple of years.’ (Metro North, 2009)
