Research Results (Phase 1, Year 1): Test of Basic Concepts Knowledge

Results of the Test of Basic Concepts Knowledge (TBCK)

The test was independently administered to a baseline sample of learners (n=168) in 2019 and was readministered to project learners (n=145) in 2020.

The data was gathered from learners when they were in Grade 1.

The project learners were exposed to the Basic Concepts Programme in 2019 when they were in Grade R.

12 project schools (6 from Pixley Ka Seme and 6 from John Taolo Gaetsewe) were randomly selected to participate in the study. These schools represent 38% of the project schools.

14 learners were randomly selected from each of the schools to participate in the study.

There was a decline in the number of 'very poor' and 'poor' learners by 25% and 38% respectively.

The results also found that 54% of project learners were school prepared, compared to only 28% of baseline learners. There was a 93% improvement in the number of school prepared learners.

The project aimed to improve the school preparedness of project learners by up to 30%.

These results are therefore very encouraging and indicate a significant shift in the project learners after receiving the BCP intervention.
