Ikwezi Project

Supported by

Schools

For me the most effective aspect was the basic teaching model.  When I implemented the model I found that my learners were more focussed when I followed the steps of the model.

I found all aspects of the course very effective.  I now have a very good understanding of how to teach all the concepts.  I am going to be more specific and detailed when I teach. I need to research and plan my basic concepts lessons ...

I am doing things differently and a bit better. I am going deeper and helping the child to have a mind picture.

My knowledge of the national curriculum was strengthened as BCP and the national curriculum work closely together.

We were shown new methods and teaching practices which make us more open-minded about our teaching.

BCP is very strong in numeracy (shapes, colours, position). That is why this school does well in maths in the Foundation Phase as our systemic results have proven.

Description

Initiated by the Schools Development Unit at UCT, the project aims to strengthen mother-tongue Xhosa instruction and to raise the standard of literacy and numeracy in Grade R and Grade 1 over a 4 year period, while supporting the whole primary school (Grade R – 6). The BCP has been introduced to Grade R and Grade 1 teachers as part of the project. The teachers have received regular mentoring and support in their classes by the project Field Worker. The teachers have also been assisted to integrate the BCP teaching model into their classroom teaching.

Evaluation

Baseline data was gathered from a sample of Grade 1 learners in the project schools at the start of the project (2009). (See research below).

Each year learners who participated in the programme in Grade R are tested at the start of their Grade 1 year. (See research below).

Learners who received intervention in Grade R in 2009 and Grade 1 in 2010 will also be reassessed at the end of Grade 3 (2012). The results will be compared with the national systemic data for Grade 3 learners at these schools.
