Hantam Community Education Trust (HCET)
Description
The project was implemented by class teachers in Grade R to Grade 4 at Umthombo Wolwazi School over four years. The need for the project was identified as a result of the pervasive language difficulties experienced by learners at the farm school. The school was concerned that learners were not able to cope with English as the language of instruction from Grade 4 onwards.
The project aimed to systematically improve the language and scholastic functioning of learners in order to prepare them for future learning in a setting where English is the medium of instruction.
Evaluation
The results of the project found that the scholastic performance and knowledge of basic conceptual systems of learners improved significantly during the project. Furthermore the scholastic functioning of learners in the Foundation Phase improved towards the scores expected of learners in that grade during the project.
