Namaqua Education District, Northern Cape (Phase 1)
Description
The project aims to significantly improve the quality of teaching-learning in Grade R classes in selected clusters of the Namaqua District. The project is premised on the assumption that improved teaching and learning in Grade R will contribute towards improved learning in the Foundation Phase and particularly in Grade 1. The project has focussed strongly on the development of Grade R teachers as mediators of learning experiences to develop the requisite language and conceptual understanding of their learners. A team of District Officials has received training to coach and mentor these teachers in their classes.
Evaluation
Baseline data was gathered from a sample of Grade 1 learners at the end of the year in 2010. (See research below).
Grade 1 learners who participated in the Grade R programme during 2011 were tested at the start of 2012 to determine their readiness for learning in Grade 1. (See research below). They will again be tested at the end of 2012. Comparisons will be made between the Grade 1 Baseline data in 2010 and the Intervention Group data (2012)
