Main takeaways -
Thirteen teachers are currently participating in the South Communities Basic Concepts training programme, aimed at strengthening classroom teaching through the use of the Basic Concepts approach. Two of the six training sessions have been completed so far, introducing educators to the foundations of the programme and the specialised materials used to support learners’ conceptual and language development.
During the sessions, teachers explored key topics including mediation, the Concept Teaching Model, and strategies for mediating the higher-order concepts of colour and shape. Participants have observed two demonstration lessons, as well as taken part in practical, hands-on activities. These included practising mediated lessons with one another and describing objects using the higher-order concepts featured in the Basic Concepts Programme, allowing teachers to apply the strategies in a collaborative and supportive setting.
Despite the sessions taking place after a full teaching day, the teachers have expressed great enthusiasm for the training. Many participants have shared that they are enjoying the experience and value the new knowledge and practical strategies they are gaining, which they look forward to implementing in their own classrooms to support learners’ understanding and thinking skills.
