Final Evaluation Results from ZFM District Confirm Positive Impact of BCP
Since 2019, the Basic Concepts Programme (BCP) has been systematically scaled to all Grade R classes across the Northern Cape. The ZFM district marks the final phase of this province-wide implementation.
As part of the BC Advocacy Project, baseline and endline evaluations were conducted in six project schools, using the Test of Basic Concepts Knowledge (TBCK) to assess Grade 1 learners’ school readiness. One school was excluded from the final analysis due to incomplete data.
A clear upward trend is evident in the results across all five schools: Average scores increased from the "Weak" range (11–17) into the "Average" (18–20) and even "Strong" (21–24) categories. Vooruitsig and Pabalello showed especially notable gains, while the overall project average rose from 16.36 to 19.63.
These findings confirm the positive impact of the BCP on learner readiness and align with results from previous districts. The consistent upward trajectory across all phases of the project offers strong support for the BCP’s effectiveness as a large-scale cognitive intervention in the early years.
