Metro East Focus Schools Project - Support Visit 3 (Size), May 2026

Encouraging Progress Across MEED Schools as Teachers Strengthen Basic Concepts Implementation
During our recent support visits to MEED schools, we were encouraged by the significant improvement observed since our previous round of visits. Teachers appeared better prepared, with most classrooms having the required materials ready, and there was clear evidence that many educators are making a genuine effort to implement the Basic Concepts Programme with greater consistency. Administrative requirements, including registers, workbooks, and session planners, were generally in place, although some still require updating. The presence and active involvement of MEED officials during the first two visits was particularly encouraging and provided valuable support to teachers.
Across many classrooms, learners demonstrated growing understanding of the SIZE concepts through matching, comparing, ordering, drawing, and seriation activities. Several classes showed impressive use of conceptual language, while learner work and classroom activities provided evidence of transfer and application. We were especially pleased to see learners increasingly making comparisons independently and engaging with conceptual tasks in meaningful ways. Strong examples of implementation, teacher commitment, and learner participation were evident throughout the visits.
While there is still work to be done, the overall trajectory is positive. The visits highlighted increasing teacher buy-in, improved classroom organisation, and growing learner engagement with the programme. We leave this round of support visits feeling optimistic about the progress being made and appreciative of the commitment shown by both teachers and district officials.
