Description

The Kwena Basin Extension Project (KBEP) is a multi-year educational initiative aimed at improving the foundational learning of Grade R to Grade 3 learners in Mpumalanga.

Building on a successful pilot, the project focuses on enhancing reading, writing, and mathematical skills to better prepare learners for the Intermediate Phase. Central to the project is the ongoing development of teachers through mentoring and coaching, ensuring effective classroom practice.

In collaboration with the Mpumalanga Department of Education, the KBEP also trains community volunteers to support local implementation.

The project is designed to be scalable and sustainable, with the long-term goal of expanding its impact across the province.

Evaluation

The Kwena Basin Extension Project will be evaluated through a combination of baseline and endline assessments to measure learner progress in key areas such as reading, writing, and mathematics. Performance will be compared to control groups from nearby schools to determine the programme’s impact. In the Grade R year, we will specifically track improvements in school readiness. Ongoing classroom observations and teacher feedback will also inform the evaluation process. These insights will help us refine the intervention and support long-term scalability and sustainability.
