From Training to Transformation: Learning Comes Alive in Classrooms
Following the initial training sessions on Colour, mediation, and the Basic Concepts Cognitive toolkit, teachers participating in the Bridges of Learning project have begun translating theory into practice in their own classrooms.
In the first round of school visits, the Basic Concepts (BC) team observed and supported educators as they implemented what they had learned. Each teacher either facilitated a session independently or participated in a live demonstration led by a BC fieldworker, creating valuable opportunities for hands-on learning and reflection.
The classroom visits proved to be a critical component of the programme, offering tailored guidance and real-time feedback. Where necessary, BC fieldworkers provided practical support to strengthen lesson delivery, deepen questioning techniques, and enhance mediation strategies.
Teachers reported that these in-class experiences helped bring the training content to life, making abstract ideas more tangible and easier to apply. The collaborative nature of the visits also fostered confidence, as teachers refined their skills in a supportive, non-evaluative environment.
A key focus of the Basic Concepts approach is depth over breadth. Rather than introducing concepts superficially, teachers are encouraged to engage learners in a thorough exploration that builds clear, robust understanding. This “deep dive” methodology ensures that children are not only able to grasp core concepts, but can also transfer and apply their knowledge meaningfully in everyday contexts.
Feedback from teachers indicates that this approach, combined with ongoing support, is already making a noticeable difference in both teaching practice and learner engagement.
