Social Media Post #146: Questioning Changes Thinking

We are raising confident communicators.

But are we raising careful thinkers?

In a world shaped by fast information and constant opinion, the ability to speak is often mistaken for the ability to think. Yet evidence continues to show that intelligence alone does not protect us from poor judgement. What matters is the discipline of thinking.

Too often, we see opinions formed quickly—without questioning, comparison, or reflection. Over time, this weakens our ability to distinguish fact from fiction.

If we are serious about preparing children for a complex and rapidly changing world, then critical thinking cannot be left to later years. It must begin early.

It begins with simple, intentional questions:
 • How do you know?
 • What is the same and what is different?
 • Can it be another way?
 • Why do you think that?

Through structured dialogue, the Basic Concepts Programme (BCP) builds the foundations of thinking—helping children to slow down, consider alternatives, and justify their reasoning.

This is how we begin to develop the kind of thinking that underpins stronger learning, better decision-making, and ultimately, the Brain Power envisioned in South Africa’s long-term strategy for children.

Not just to answer. But to understand.
