Social Media Post #147: BCP Theoretical Model

How Thinking is Built

Cognitive development in young children is not accidental — it follows a clear progression.

The Basic Concepts Programme is built on a solid conceptual-linguistic model that moves children from:

• Foundational concepts (Colour, Shape, Size, Position)
• Through mediated learning and the integration of concepts with language
• To higher-order thinking skills: comparing, analysing, and solving problems

This model illustrates how we support the transition from simple single-feature understanding to complex multi-feature processing and relationships.

A practical and theoretically grounded approach to building genuine thinking foundations in early learning.

We’re always interested in engaging with other approaches working at this intersection of theory and practice and particularly those grounded in a clear understanding of how children learn.
