Concept Builders: Building the Foundations for Learning
Concept Builders
Building the foundations for learning
Many children struggle at school not because they lack ability, but because the language and thinking foundations for learning are not yet fully developed. When these foundational skills are weak, children may find it difficult to follow instructions, express their ideas, and keep up with classroom learning.
Concept Builders is a small-group intervention designed to strengthen these essential skills, helping children make better sense of what they are learning at school.
What skills do children develop?
Through structured, interactive sessions, children are supported to:
* understand and follow instructions more easily
* learn and use new vocabulary
* express their ideas with greater clarity
* understand key concepts such as position, sequence, comparison and categories
* develop reasoning and problem-solving skills
* build readiness for reading, writing and mathematics
What happens in the groups?
Children work in small, supportive groups (6–8 learners) where they:
* talk and think together
* practise listening and problem-solving
* engage with important thinking concepts
* build confidence in speaking and learning
Sessions are guided, engaging and carefully structured to support both language development and cognitive growth.
Who may benefit?
Concept Builders is particularly helpful for learners who:
* struggle to follow instructions or classroom discussions
* have a limited vocabulary or difficulty expressing themselves
* find reading, writing or mathematics challenging
* appear capable but are not reaching their potential
* need stronger foundations to access the curriculum
The programme is especially suited to Grade RR and Foundation Phase learners, and can be adapted for older children with learning barriers.
Why these skills matter
Understanding concepts such as size, position, order, comparison and classification helps children make sense of learning across the school day. These are the building blocks of learning, and strengthening them can make a meaningful difference to a child’s confidence and progress.
A structured, supported intervention
Concept Builders is based on the Basic Concepts Programme (BCP) and is guided by the Basic Concepts Foundation (BCF). This ensures a structured, research-informed approach, with ongoing monitoring of each child’s progress.
