The programme has made a very big difference to my learners. Learners can sort, compare, draw, name and write as many words in English as they can in their mother tongue.

Today’s workshop was very interesting because it shows us where to start when you teach letter, e.g. I can see, sound, feel, touch and draw the letter A...

Thank you so much for the good training. I didn’t realise that I was going to get so much out of this… continue with the good work.

I have learned so much through the Kwena Basic Education Trust and for that I would like to take this opportunity to say: thank you.

Today was definitely interesting and thought provoking. Learning about each conceptual domain is a challenge and I continue to learn new things that change my perceptions of how children learn and how I should teach them.

The workshop was very educational … these are things we take for granted … I think that if we use the knowledge and skills… we will get amazing results from our learners.

I enjoyed this domain (size) the most… I feel that it is all starting to click for me now. I enjoy learning through a combination of notes, PowerPoint, and practical exercises – it helps to make sense of the theory.

I like that we can integrate the concepts with our CAPS curriculum. They fit in with maths- data handling… we are able to describe a sequence according to colour, shape and size.

I now know what the six basic concepts are. I can ‘unpack’ the concepts. I know how to teach learners in detail. Learners can write or answer in a full sentence. Questions and instructions must be clear.

The basic concepts programme will help us to teach learners... step-by-step until they understand. It helps learners to expand their vocabulary and to be confident.

Description

This project aims to systematically improve the language, cognitive and scholastic functioning of Foundation Phase learners from four multi-grade schools in the Kwena Basin by focusing on the quality of teaching and learning. The Basic Concepts Programme (BCP) will be used as a common approach to develop and extend the prerequisites for learning in English (First Additional Language). The teachers will be trained as mediators of the BCP and will receive ongoing mentorship and support during the project.

Evaluation

The learners who start the project in Grade R will be tracked until they enter Grade 3. Baseline data will be gathered at the start of the project from all learners in the Foundation Phase. Data will thereafter be gathered on an annual basis to assess learners' language, cognitive and scholastic functioning.

The project aims to increase  the number of Grade 3 learners who are ready to progress to Grade 4 by 50%.
