Outcome: The project was prematurely terminated by the Vyrgrond Community
Development Trust owing to funding difficulties.

Target of intervention: 1200 learners
Description: The project was implemented by Grade R teachers. Two groups
of Grade R educators were trained in 2008 and 2009. The teachers received
regular support and mentoring from the Project Coordinator for a period
of one year. The project results found that a majority (85%) of the
learners who participated in the programme in 2008 were prepared for
learning in Grade 1 in 2009. The majority (70%) of the learners tested
in 2009 were ready to progress to Grade 2 at the end of the year. The
data for learners who participated in the programme in 2009 and are
now in Grade 1 will be gathered at the end of the year.

Target of intervention: 1400 learners
Description: The project was implemented by Grade R teachers in the
district. Two groups of educators were trained in 2008 and 2009. The
teachers received regular support and mentoring from Learning Support
Teachers and the Project Team for a period of one year. The project
results found that a majority (67%) of the learners who participated
in the programme in 2008 were prepared for learning in Grade 1 in 2009.
The majority (71%) of the learners tested in 2009 were ready to progress
to Grade 2 at the end of the year. The data for learners who participated
in the programme in 2009 and are now in Grade 1 will be gathered at
the end of the year.

A Project For Rotary (Waterfront Branch) And The Rural Namaquland
Education Trust

Target of intervention: 164 learners
Description: The project was implemented in all classes in the Foundation
Phase (Grade R – Grade 3) at three multi-grade rural schools.
The educators at the project schools were trained to implement the intervention
programme. The teachers received regular support from District Officials
as well as visits from the Project Leader over the duration of the project.
The results of the project found significant benefits for learners who
had participated in the project when compared to learners from comparable
control schools in the district.

Description: The project was implemented by the Grade R teacher at this
school with all her learners (n=20). The class was divided into five
groups with four learners in each group. The teacher received mentoring
and support at her school on a quarterly basis. The children were assessed
at the end of the project (n=16): 69% of the learners were prepared
for Grade 1, while 21% of the learners were not yet considered ready
for learning in Grade 1.

Hebrew Pre-Primary School System, Cape Town, Western

Description: The project was implemented by Grade R teachers at three
schools within the school system. The BCP was primarily used to promote
and enhance the cognitive functioning of learners, however, was also
used intensively with learners who experienced a range of information
processing and learning difficulties. The programme is still being used
for learners who have learning difficulties in the school system.

A Project Of The Hantam Community
Education Trust
Year: 2003-2006

Description: The project was implemented by class teachers over four
years (2003-2006) in Grade R to Grade 3. The results of the project
found that the scholastic performance and knowledge of basic conceptual
systems of learners improved significantly during the project. Furthermore
the scholastic functioning of learners in the Foundation Phase improved
towards the scores expected of learners in that grade (reading, addition,
subtration) during the project, with the exception of spelling.
