Kwena Basin Education Trust: Word Test Results (2014-2017)

Word Test Results:

Baseline (2014) + Year 1 (2015) + Year 2 (2016) + Year 3 (2017)

The Word Test is a literacy test designed to determine the number of words written by learners in 15 minutes.

The learners’ literacy knowledge is assessed on an annual basis in Grades 3 & 4.

The results of the Word Test are compared with the baseline data on an annual basis.

Year 1 (2015): The scores of the Grade 3 learners have declined by -4,49points, while the Grade 4 learners have improved by +11,34 points.

Year 2 (2016): The scores of the Grade 3 learners have declined by -8,44 points, while the Grade 4 learners have improved by +11,13 points.

Year 3 (2017): The scores of the Grade 3 learners have declined by -4,95 points, while the Grade 4 learners have improved by +3,19 points.

The scores of the Grade 3 learners were on average 15,12 points higher than the local comparison group. This equates to approximately 10 months of development.

The scores of the Grade 4 learners were on average 29,68 points higher than the local comparison group. This equates to approximately 1.6 years of development.

Gain Scores

Word score gains have been calculated from year to year. The gains are calculated by subtracting the Grade 4 gains after intervention in Grade 3 in the previous year (e.g. Grade 4s scores in 2015 - Grade 3s scores in 2014).

The average gains (18,3) for the project learners are equivalent to approximately 1year of development, while the gains of the control learners are equivalant to approximately 3 months of development.
