Kamiesberg Project: Project Context

The project was implemented in four small rural villages in the Kamiesberg Municipality of the Northern Cape, namely: Kheis, Nourivier, Rooifontein and Kammasies.

Three of the villages are located in the Kamiesberg mountains and are often inaccessible to regular vehicles during the rainy season in July.  The area, well known for its magnificent flower displays during August/September, is transformed into a semi-desert landscape during the summer months.

The residents are descendents of the Nama people, originally from Namibia and have inhabited these areas for over 2000 years. Their way of life has in some respects remained unchanged over this time.
