i) Dynamic Assessment and intervention of children with
learning difficulties. Dynamic assessment investigates how children perform
when provided with assistance/teaching. The assessor aims to develop an
understanding of the barriers to learning that children experience as
well as the interventions that are required to improve cognitive and affective
functioning. Dynamic Assessment aims to change and improve the current
functioning of children through the use of individualized metacognitive
and affective-motivational strategies. Although Dynamic Assessment primarily
uses qualitative procedures to determine learning strengths and weaknesses,
quantitative procedures (pre-post test scores) are also used to obtain
measures of modifiability.
ii) Assessment of school preparedness:
The assessment provides information about the pre-school child’s
cognitive and emotional preparedness to start formal schooling. Appropriate
recommendations for teaching-learning and intervention are made. A school
preparedness screening test is available for school systems (to be used
at the start of Grade 1).
iii) Group Testing of the Scholastic Levels of Foundation
Phase Learners:
Assessment and monitoring of the performance of Foundation Phase learners
(Grade 1-Grade 3). A battery of scholastic tests is administered on an
annual basis and feedback of results provided. The results are often used
to determine the appropriateness of learner progression, to select learners
for intervention and to establish effective learner groupings.
iv) Individual Therapy:
Short term, client-centred, solution-focussed counselling of young adults
and adults. Career guidance and supportive counselling for students to
develop effective learning and coping strategies.
